Schizoaffective disorder is a lifelong chronic illness that is characterized by hallucinations or delusions, and symptoms of a mood disorder, like depression and mania, per the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). While some symptoms are the same as schizophrenia, this disorder is different. However, it is considered a serious mental illness.
The Florida Department of Health reports for 2019 shows that Broward County, where North Lauderdale is located, had 7,482 hospitalizations for individuals with schizophrenic disorder and 10,946 for mood and depressive disorders.
Looking into how well the state manages mental health issues, you might be dismayed. The Florida Behavioral Health Association notes that 61.7% of adults with any mental illness did not receive treatment, which is higher than the national average of 55.8%. The state ranks 44th of 50 in access to mental health care.
Florida’s percentage for adults over age 18 with a serious mental illness is 4.1, and 38.9 of those with any mental illness received mental health services. In addition, the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) report mentions that 49.4% of adults over age 18 used illicit drugs in the past year, 39.8% used marijuana, 32.7% binge drank alcohol, and 13.8% used opioids. People who struggle with serious mental illness, such as schizoaffective disorder, often use alcohol and drugs to lessen the disorder’s symptoms. Substance abuse is not unheard of when a person desperately wants to escape symptoms related to the disorder.
If you or someone you care about has a schizoaffective disorder or a co-occurring substance use disorder, you can receive needed treatment and care close to home in or near North Lauderdale.
Vista Pines Treatment in North Lauderdale
Mental health disorders can cause a great deal of devastation in the lives of those who are living with schizoaffective disorder. If left untreated, individuals may resort to self-medicating their symptoms with illicit drugs or alcohol, or both. Hallucinations or delusions are distressing to both the person experiencing them and those around them. The high rift of mania and the deep low of depression are also troubling symptoms that will benefit greatly from treatment.
Vista Pines Health is an accredited mental health facility located in Pembroke Pines, which is not far from North Lauderdale. Our staff is licensed, caring, and dedicated professionals with years of medical and psychological experience.
When we first admit you into our treatment programs, you will sit with a counselor and undergo a thorough assessment of your most acute needs. Once this is done, you may be admitted into detox if it is determined that substance abuse is prevalent. Inpatient/residential treatment follows detox and provides sound, proven therapies to help you get on the road to addiction recovery and practice new methods of managing schizoaffective disorder.
Detox on our campus is medically managed 24 hours per day for the time you are going through substance use withdrawal. We ensure you are medically stable, hydrated, and as comfortable as possible throughout your time in detox. You may be given medication to ease the worst of your withdrawal symptoms. Your time in detox depends on how long you have been abusing substances, how much you had taken before you arrived at Vista Pines, and your overall health.
Our inpatient/residential treatment program begins when detox is complete, and your personal treatment plan is developed. We believe that each person in our care is unique, so your treatment plan will be personalized to your specific needs. We practice evidence-based behavioral therapies that have been proven to be effective in treating mental health and substance use disorders. Along with those, we offer educational sessions covering a variety of relevant issues and classes in coping and life skills.
We at Vista Pines Health offer widely respected treatment methods that many mental health and substance abuse disorder practitioners across the globe use. We also provide complementary therapies and gender-specific group therapy sessions at our sister facility next door.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a type of psychological treatment that focuses on changing incorrect or negative thought processes. It is based on the theory that psychological problems can stem from faulty ways of thinking, which affects your emotions and causes unhelpful behavior. CBT helps you learn how to identify distorted thinking that causes problems, understand how it affects your behavior, and engagement skills to give you a stronger sense of confidence in yourself.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical behavior therapy at Vista Pines Health will help you learn and practice new skills in managing difficult emotions and learn how to decrease conflict in your life. DBT has four focal points: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Mindfulness teaches you how to be in and accept the present moment and not in the past.
Distress tolerance stresses increasing your tolerance of negative emotion and not trying to evade it. Emotion regulation will help you learn new strategies in managing and changing intense emotions and the problems they create for you. Interpersonal effectiveness skills will help strengthen communication skills so that you gain self-respect, are assertive, and bolster relationships.
If you have a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder at the same time, you have dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis is not an actual diagnosis. Rather, it indicates you have a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder. This is essential as it means your recovery program will treat both disorders at the same time. Treating one disorder without the other does not benefit anyone. With integrated treatment, you will receive the best approaches for both disorders. We provide the most comprehensive dual diagnosis therapies that are vital for schizoaffective disorder.
Schizoaffective Disorder Treatment in North Lauderdale FAQ
We understand that you may have many questions about schizoaffective disorder treatment. It may seem insurmountable to consider what it entails, how much it might cost, and how you might get to Vista Pines Health. The questions and answers below might offer you more information that perhaps you’ve been trying to find. If other questions arise, please feel free to contact us.
How long is rehab?
Your time in rehab depends on your specific circumstances. If you need to detox from abused substances, your time in rehab will be longer than someone who doesn’t need detox. The recommended guideline for time is 90 days in order for treatment to be most effective. You may not need to be in rehab for that long, or you may be in rehab longer. You will most likely learn how long rehab will be for you when you go through the initial assessment.
Does Vista Pines Health provide transportation?
We may provide transportation to and from our campus from nearby airports, bus stations, and train stations. We may also be able to provide assistance in arranging rideshares. You will need to arrange and pay for your flights, bus or train travel, or rideshare. In addition, if you have an outside medical appointment that you must attend, we can help get you there and back to our campus. Transportation is one of the top obstacles in obtaining treatment, and we aim to eliminate it.
How much does schizoaffective disorder treatment cost?
Schizoaffective disorder treatment costs are largely determined by what your needs are. Mental health treatment alone might entail approved medications for managing symptoms. Add in substance use treatment, and the cost could be more. On a broad note, treatment costs may be from a few thousand dollars to more. Don’t let that frighten you away from getting help. There are options to pay for treatment, such as health insurance and private pay. Money should not be an obstacle in obtaining mental health and substance abuse treatment.
Do I have to travel?
If you are not located in the South Florida region, it might be good to be away from home and far from the triggers of substance abuse. Of course, this means you must travel. If travel is not a possibility for you, we can help you find someplace closer to your home. If you live locally, you will also need to travel to reach our campus in Pembroke Pines. If you are planning to come to our campus, please let us know. Perhaps, we can help coordinate travel plans with you.
What insurance carriers does Vista Pines Health take?
We are pleased to share that we accept most of the major insurance carriers and their plans. Unfortunately, at this time, we do not take federally funded insurance, such as Medicaid and Medicare. If you contact us, we can verify your insurance and what it covers under mental health and substance use disorders. It would also be beneficial to read through your plan to find out what’s covered, and perhaps, contact your provider if you have any questions about out-of-pocket expenses, coinsurance, and copays.
